Early Golden Globe Award winners include Robert Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

The Early Golden Globe Award winners involve Robert Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. The ceremony will take place at Los Angeles’ Beverley Hilton Hotel.

Downey Jr. received the award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

In his acceptance speech, he joked, “A sweeping story about the ethical dilemma of nuclear weapons grosses $1bn?”

“Dozens of people have approached me since the summer saying I was unrecognizably subtle as Lewis Strauss,” the actor continued. Let’s not pretend this is a compliment to my fellow nominees.”

He also mentioned the changes made to the Golden Globes membership in the aftermath of a scandal involving corruption and a lack of diversity. “Thanks for changing your game,” he said.
Randolph won Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of a grieving mother following the death of her son in The Holdovers.

“Mary, you have changed my life, you have made me feel seen in so many ways,” she said of her character. “And I hope I helped you all find your inner Mary because there is a little bit of her in all of us.”

She expressed gratitude to the film’s director, Alexander Payne, saying, “Thank you for allowing me to play this beautiful and flawed woman.”

Anatomy of a Fall, a courtroom drama, was named best screenplay. Its director, Justine Triet, recalled the writing process with her partner, Arthur Harari.

“We were in the pandemic,” she told me, “and my life partner and I spent our days co-writing the screenplay for Anatomy of a Fall, stuck in our apartment – and strangely, nobody died.”

Early winners in the TV categories include Steven Yeun and Ali Wong for their roles in Beef, as well as Jeremy Allen White for The Bear.

Elizabeth Debicki, who played Princess Diana in The Crown, was named best supporting actress in a TV series. She expressed gratitude to the show’s producers for “trusting me with this part.”

For his performance in Succession, Matthew Macfadyen was named best TV supporting actor. “I just adored every second of playing the human grease stain that is Tom Wambsgans,” he said with a laugh.

Other film nominees include Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, Past Lives, and May-December, while TV nominees include Succession, The Crown, and The Last of Us.

The Globes are the first major ceremony of the film awards season, which concludes on March 10 with the Oscars.

This year’s Golden Globes include some new categories, including one honoring box office success.

Emma Stone, Sandra Hüller, Lily Gladstone, Margot Robbie, Annette Bening, and Carey Mulligan are among the nominees for best actress in the drama and musical or comedy categories.

Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Wright, Cillian Murphy, Barry Keoghan, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Bradley Cooper are among the nominees for best actor in both categories.

Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s big-screen adaptation of Life in Plastic, leads the way with nine nominations at the Globes.

Three of these nominations, however, are in the same category. Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and Ryan Gosling have all received nominations for their contributions to the film’s soundtrack.

Barbie grossed $1.44 billion (£1.14 billion) worldwide and was released on the same day as Oppenheimer, which grossed $953 million (£755 million) and received eight Academy Award nominations.

The tone of Christopher Nolan’s biopic of J Robert Oppenheimer, the inventor of the nuclear bomb, could not have been more dissimilar, but audiences flocked to both films this summer.

Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon has received seven nominations. The film is about members of an Osage group who were brutally murdered in the 1920s as white settlers attempted to move into their land, fueled by greed for oil.

Poor Things has also received nominations in seven categories. In Yorgos Lanthimos’ adaptation of the novel of the same name, Emma Stone plays an infant whose brain has been transplanted into the body of an adult woman, and she embarks on a journey of self-discovery around the world.

Past Lives, Celine Song’s directorial debut, has received five nominations. It tells the story of a woman living in the United States who reconnects with the man who was her best friend at school when she was growing up in South Korea.

Maestro, a Leonard Bernstein biopic, Anatomy of a Fall, and May December, about an actress who spends time with the real-life subject of her next film, a woman at the center of a tabloid scandal, each has four nominations.

Who is hosting the Golden Globes this year?

Robert Downey Jr. and Da'Vine Joy Randolph.

Jo Koy, a comedian and actor from the United States, will host this year’s ceremony.

Although not a household name in the United Kingdom, the 52-year-old has previously hosted Comedy Central and Netflix specials. Haunted Mansion and Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens are among his acting credits.

“I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special,” Koy said in a statement.

“I’m thrilled to be hosting… This is the opportunity for me to make my Filipino family proud. Thank you (Google it)!”

We looked it up, and Mahal Kita is a Filipino expression that means “I love you.”

Oprah Winfrey, Matt Damon, Jared Leto, Dua Lipa, Ben Affleck, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, and Florence Pugh will be among the category presenters on the night.

The new cinematic and box office achievement category includes nominations for eight of the year’s highest-earning, most acclaimed, or most-watched films.

This is partly to ensure that box office smashes like Barbie and Oppenheimer are recognized, but it’s also a way for the Globes to include more films and invite more celebrities to the ceremony.

Taylor Swift is up for an award for her concert film The Eras Tour. Nominations for the latest John Wick, Mission: Impossible, and Guardians of the Galaxy films join nominations for mainstream films that don’t typically appear during awards season.

Another new category is the best television stand-up comedian. Ricky Gervais, Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, and Wanda Sykes are among the nominees.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which was behind the Golden Globes, caused controversy in 2021 due to allegations of corruption and a lack of diversity in its voting body.

The 2022 ceremony was drastically reduced as the Globes cleaned the house. Over the next three years, the voting body grew from around 90 to 300 members, and it is now much more diverse.

Following the controversy, the HFPA was dissolved, and the event was sold to Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions.

Questions remained about whether the Globes would be allowed back into Hollywood, but stars overwhelmingly returned to the ceremony in 2023, despite a rumored boycott.

However, expanding the members’ body brought its own set of issues: some members threatened to abstain from voting after learning they were not invited to this year’s ceremony.

Why are the Golden Globes so important?

Robert Downey Jr. and Da'Vine Joy Randolph.

The Golden Globes are traditionally a lighter-hearted event than many of the other film awards ceremonies.

Celebrity guests are usually in a good mood, fresh from their Christmas break, and ready to mingle over a few drinks when the event takes place in the first week of January.

The Bafta Film Awards and the Oscars, on the other hand, are much more formal events with more prestigious prizes.

A Golden Globes win, on the other hand, can add significant momentum to an awards campaign, with recipients allowed to deliver a rousing acceptance speech on TV at a time when Oscar voters are considering their nominations.

A Golden Globe nomination is far more likely than an Oscar nomination. The Academy Awards have 20 slots available in total for film acting categories, compared to 36 at the Globes.
