Nigeria hit by Osimhen scare ahead of AFCON semi-final againt South Africa

Star striker Victor Osimhen missed the team’s flight because of alleged “abdominal discomfort,” so Nigeria will have to wait anxiously to find out if he is fit.
The Super Eagles’ five Africa Cup of Nations games have seen the Napoli talisman start each time, scoring once and providing an assist.
However, during their 1-0 quarterfinal victory over Angola, stoppage time saw him carted off. Osimhen missed the team’s Monday flight to Bouake because of “abdominal discomfort,” according to a statement from Nigeria that has now provided an update.
The Athletic reports that Osimhen will be evaluated once more on Tuesday before making a decision.
On Wednesday night, Nigeria takes on South Africa in the first semi-final.
The statement said: “Today, team members took an Air Cote D’Ivoire flight at 10 p.m. to get to Bouake from Abidjan. Osimhen, however, was unable to travel because of stomach pain. According to team medics, he is under close observation, and one of the medical team members is staying behind in Abidjan to accompany him. He will rejoin the squad before 5 p.m. if cleared by tomorrow morning.”

Even though he hasn’t been playing at his peak like he did during Napoli’s Scudetto-winning season last year, Osimhen is still an important member of Nigeria’s starting lineup. The 25-year-old boasts a wealth of experience playing on the Italian and European stages, in addition to his 27 international caps.
While the Super Eagles would miss him greatly, players like Ademola Lookman would be able to help out in part. With three goals and an assist in the competition, the Atalanta forward has wowed the crowd in Cote d’Ivoire.
Nigeria has three AFCON titles in its history. They last won on the continent in 2013, defeating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the championship match.
Nigeria is now 24 spots ahead of Wednesday’s opponents, South Africa, in the FIFA rankings, sitting at number 42. Though they will suffer a crushing blow if Osimhen isn’t judged well enough to play, they will be quietly confident of earning their first AFCON final spot in eleven years.
